The Velvet Knives of Saint Varo

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Assassin Order — Pilgrim Caravans and Portable Courts#

"He challenged me legally, I am told. The duel was witnessed, the forms were observed, and the body was left where etiquette required. I cannot explain why I find this worse than plain murder." — magistrate, Oravel, 112 AR

The Velvet Knives take their name from Saint Varo of the Threshold, a minor pre-collapse legal martyr whose shrine doctrine held that any dispute settled by witnessed combat was morally equivalent to a court judgment. The order has spent the last century building an elaborate jurisprudence around that idea. Its members travel as registered duelists, witness-arbiters, and caravan notaries — vocations that require swords and place them in proximity to people wealthy enough to have enemies. Their portable courts, assembled from folding furniture and stamped legal vellum, can convene anywhere and produce documents with the formal weight of a baronial tribunal.

A standard commission begins with a client submitting a grievance through one of the order's licensed caravan courts. The target is then served with a lawful notice of dispute and offered the opportunity to settle by arbitration — an offer structured to be declined. The resulting duel is witnessed by two order members serving as seconds, recorded in triplicate, and filed with a regional registry. The target dies in a documented legal proceeding. The Velvet Knives receive a fee categorized as court costs.

Several noble houses have begun employing Varo-trained duelists as household staff, which has produced a class of counter-duelists who recognize the order's procedural signatures and specialize in surviving their challenges. The order's response has been to develop a secondary practice: death by legal exhaustion — interminable injunctions, asset freezes, and witness-tampering that ruin targets without ever requiring a blade. Adventurers contracted to escort the order's notaries sometimes discover the caravan's legal documents conceal something considerably more fragile and more dangerous than vellum.
