Factions: Aurelian Reach & Corsairs
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
Small but consequential organizations nested inside the shattered west. These groups generate patrons, rivals, city plots, and deniable pressure without replacing the major realms.
Aurelian Reach — Core Factions#
| Type | Name | Base | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Merchant league | The Brass Ledger Compact | Auraleth, Saint Auric, inland toll roads | Confederation of carriers, assayers, and debt-arbiters keeping trade moving. Quietly engineers short wars to break monopolies and buys defaulted baronies through layered debt. |
| Underground society | The Candle Below | Crypt-chapels beneath ruined bathhouses | Smuggles letters, relics, and people between hostile cities. Cell leaders preserve banned imperial census archives and use them to blackmail noble lines. |
| Assassin order | The Velvet Knives of Saint Varo | Portable courts hidden in pilgrim caravans | Contract killers presenting as legal duelists. Employed to make murders look like lawful satisfactions between houses. |
| Noble bloc | The Pale Laurel Houses | Old vineyard estates south of broken roads | Ancient families claiming descent from provincial governors who pretend the empire can be restored through pedigree. Unite against commoners and free cities whenever aristocratic privilege is threatened. |
| Mercenary brotherhood | The Ash Banner Companies | Frontier forts along the leaked west | Road-guard captains, siege engineers, and disciplined pike companies hired for hard silver. Their captains maintain a code against void-tainted contracts, but junior officers often break it. |
| Arcane society | The Collegium of Broken Measures | Former imperial observatories and law schools | Surveyors, astrologers, and jurist-magi salvaging calibrated imperial instruments. Obsessed with pre-Voiding geometry; sometimes accidentally awaken dangerous wards while mapping ruins. |
| Vampire court | The Sable Rose Courts | Hill-palaces, vineyard keeps, moonward river estates | Nocturnal houses publicly sponsoring etiquette and archival preservation. In truth use debt, blood-oaths, and controlled famine relief to turn ruined counties into feeding preserves. |
| Necromantic syndicate | The Bone Tithe Synod | Catacomb foundries, battlefield ossuaries | Licenses corpse reclamation and plague burial where civil authority has collapsed. Beneath that practical face, experiments with legal undead labor, memory extraction, and sovereign crypt-economies. |
| Imperial holdout | The Luminous Claimants | Fortified basilicas, archive-vaults, signal towers | Communities maintaining old imperial coin standards and ceremonial magistracies. Privately recruit agents, map surviving relay roads, and wait for a moment when reunification might again be thinkable. |
| Renegade march | The Severed Anvil Marches | Broken western border forts, reclaimed quarry-citadels | Iron-Bound commanders cut off when their king was annihilated at Magnus Prime. Now warlord protectorates and caravan wards; they sell disciplined protection while testing whether a merit-bound frontier order could replace decayed noble rule. |
| Spy chancery | The Mirror Salt Office | Customhouses, confessionals, river docks | Auditing service cover for manufacturing identities, correspondence forgeries, and rumor cascades designed to turn claimants against one another. |
| Monster-hunter confraternity | The Lantern Sepulcher | Pilgrim roads, saint-shrines, fortified grave inns | Escorts pilgrims through haunted districts and destroys feral undead. Tracks which noble houses bargain with vampire courts, which crypts are harvested, and which miracles are fabricated. |
| Free-city machine | The Nine Bell Republics | Bell towers and counting halls of stubborn inland communes | Republican tradition claiming any city able to ring its own bells can govern itself. Secretly funds coups, tax revolts, and carefully chosen tyrant-killings in neighboring baronies. |
| Occult salon network | The Eclipse Supper | Winter salons, shuttered theaters, manor crypts | Moving society treating prophecy, spirit traffic, masked dueling, and political matchmaking as a single art. Hidden role is to broker compacts between living elites, dead ancestors, and things drawn to the empire's old wounds. |
| Relic-forger guild | The Gilt Reliquaries | Pilgrimage markets, reliquary workshops, saint-road mint houses | Produce shrine goods and devotional treasures for the Reach's religious economy. In secret can reproduce dead dynastic regalia well enough to launch civil wars or legitimate impostors. |
| Peasant war-society | The Thorn Crown Leagues | Hill villages, forest monasteries, drained marsh redoubts | Mutual-aid leagues formed from self-defense pacts against raiders and tax predation. Privately a durable hidden federation of grain caches, horn signals, and elected captains preparing for coordinated uprisings. |
Aurelian Reach — Night Principalities & Wild Marches#
| Type | Name | Base | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vampire court | The Crimson Diet of Valedrac | Fog-bound hill palaces, vineyard crypts | Aristocratic night confederacy preserving exquisite etiquette and predatory land claims. Farms blood-tithes, manipulates inheritance law, and sponsors wars that create fresh dependency. |
| Werewolf clan league | The Moon-Fang Hearths | Deep forests, abandoned hunting lodges, shrine-stones | Kin-clans claiming the empire broke ancient pacts with the wild. Charcoal burners and trappers by day; territorial enforcers and raider-hunters by night. |
| Necromantic fellowship | The Ashen Collegium of Last Rites | University catacombs, plague towns, ossuary workshops | Corpse-lawyers and bone accountants solving succession and forensic disputes. Secretly preserve forbidden imperial cadastres, animate labor battalions, and trade memories taken from the dead. |
| Magni holdout | The Brazen Continuance | Mountain fortresses, collapsed road-forts, vault-sanctums | Clearest holdout of pre-collapse imperial continuity; maintains roads, archives, and ancient machines. Judges modern rulers as illegitimate squatters; their stores of relic engineering make them strategically priceless. |
| Iron-Bound breakaway | The Chainbreak Marches | Captured river forts, black-iron palisades on the eastern frontier | Renegade war-companies stranded when Magnus Prime destroyed the high command. Claim authority through survival, local conquest, and forged precedent rather than any living crown. |
| Bandit confederacy | The Thorn Banner Brotherhood | Ravines, toll bridges, pilgrim roads, cedar uplands | Vast umbrella for smaller robber-bands maintaining common signs, fences, and hostage customs. Present themselves as peasant defenders; privately love extortion, kidnappings, and route monopolies. |
| Exile remnant | The Court of the Ninth Ash | Wandering camps in abandoned pleasure villas | Descendants of an older regime erased in the Reach's wars, preserving a court without a country. Brokers secret claims, moves relics, and recruits from every new wave of displacement. |
| Ruin cult | The Chapel of the Hollow Crown | Collapsed basilicas, sinkhole shrines, saintless reliquaries | Penitential movement convinced the Reach can only be renewed through orchestrated suffering. Privately stages revelations, releases sealed horrors, and provokes uprisings to accelerate divine judgment. |
Corsair Coasts & Shattered Freeholds#
Cosmopolitan pirate ports, ransom cities, sea shrines, and harbor republics along the Reach's coastal margins.
| Type | Name | Base | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corsair syndicate | The Red Sails Concord | Southwestern coves, reef harbors, seized watchtowers | Pragmatic pirate league standardizing ransom, salvage rights, and prize courts. Its admirals enforce contracts more strictly than kings; secretly taxes nearly every free captain on the coast. |
| Smuggler network | The Salt-Hush Chain | Signal caves and monastery cellars cape to cape | Finest contraband runners in the west, specializing in medicines, sacred art, and people fleeing debt or vengeance. Maintain coded lantern routes known only to hereditary navigators. |
| Cultic sea order | The Shrine of Black Foam | Tide caves shared with storm chapels | Fellowship of priests and storm-callers sanctifying mutiny, luck, and survival. Some chapters bless anti-slaver captains; others drift toward extortion and bloodier rites. |
| Crew federation | The Gilded Tusk Brotherhood | Three fortress-havens built from captured hulks | Majority Iron-Bound crew known for brutal boarding actions and impeccable prize discipline. Their captains claim they only respect strength, yet fiercely protect mixed-race dockside families under their patronage. |
| Free-port nobility | The Pearl Court of Cinders | Reclaimed governor's palace above a pirate harbor | Merchant-princes and former colonists living on smuggling, privateering, and old imperial salvage. Host masquerades where marriages, betrayals, and assassination contracts are all arranged under the same chandeliers. |
| Intelligence ring | The Harpoon Office | Chandlers, ropeworks, and customs houses | Distributed spy service selling harbor intelligence to pirates, city-states, and foreign thrones alike. No one is certain whether it began as an Umbra Magni office or a Reach forgery of one. |
