The Twelve Anvils
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
Noble Coalition — Iron Heartland#
"The table seats twelve but there are always fourteen grievances. The food is excellent and everyone arrives armed." — Furnace Ledger factor, private letter
The Twelve Anvils is the name given both to the coalition of competing fortress houses that dominate the Iron Heartland's interior and to their periodic summit, a formal assembly where succession disputes, tribute allocations, border adjustments, and blood vengeances are negotiated without descending into open civil war. The coalition's genius, such as it is, lies in having formalized enough ritual around the summit table that humiliation can be accepted without being remembered as humiliation. Houses leave having given ground while technically having been treated as equals, and this fiction preserves the peace.
Every agreement made at the Twelve Anvils assembly is backed by feast-gifts — exchanges of goods, hostages, or marriage contracts that make defection costly — and by the implicit threat that the offending house's private army will face an immediate coalition response if it breaks the compact. This works imperfectly and repeatedly. The historical record contains six instances of houses leaving the summit table and immediately raising troops, all of which were eventually defeated and readmitted after suitable apology gifts were exchanged.
Adventurers who find themselves near a summit convocation will notice the roads become crowded with armed retinues, and that tavern keepers are charging treble on the reasonable assumption that someone important will pay for any damage. Being caught carrying messages between rival houses during a summit is a good way to be arrested by both simultaneously. Being caught carrying messages for the Black Rivet Office during a summit is worse.
