The Southwatch Guests

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Foreign Spy Lodge — Vorngard#

"A comfortable inn, good mead, and every table full of men listening very carefully to the table beside them." — Akeshi trade consul, private correspondence

Officially a hostel for southern traders weathering the Whale Bone Sea's capricious seasons, the Southwatch Guests operates from a cluster of well-maintained buildings in two or three major Vorngard harbors. The proprietors are scrupulously neutral, the mead excellent, and the fires warm. Every major state that trades with or fears Vorngard maintains at least one paid listener inside. Pasharan silk factors, Khavari remount buyers, Akeshi temple envoys, and remnant Magnus-successor merchants all share benches and pretend not to be in the same profession.

The lodge generates its own income by selling summaries — carefully sanitized reports on clan movements, fleet musters, and leadership transitions — to multiple buyers simultaneously. This is not considered a betrayal of any single client because everyone has agreed, tacitly, that the summaries will exist. The more valuable trade is in specifics sold exclusively to one buyer, which requires actually cultivating Vorngard contacts beyond the common room. The best Guests agents have been in-country long enough to speak the clans' dialect, attend their marriages, and predict their feuds.

The lodge's vulnerability is its own success: everyone knows what it is, which means every piece of intelligence that passes through it has been contaminated by the knowledge that enemies are also buying. A dedicated disinformation operation against a rival state, plausibly seeded through the Guests' common room, is a common tactic for every power that has figured out the game. Adventurers hired to verify intelligence frequently trace their contract back, through three intermediaries, to the very room where the false rumor was first spoken aloud.
