The Sand Veil
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
Knife Guild — Pashara#
"He died in the bathhouse, attended by three physicians and two bodyguards. The physicians agreed it was a circulatory failure. I agreed it was very convenient." — Satrapal court diarist, Ispareth
The Sand Veil operates on a philosophical premise that distinguishes it from common assassination guilds: that political excess, like an overgrown garden, requires periodic and aesthetic pruning. Their targets are not chosen for maximum violence but for maximum correction — ministers who have consolidated too much power, magistrates who have manufactured too many legal monopolies, religious figures whose piety has curdled into a tool for personal accumulation. The guild reviews commissions against an internal doctrine of political balance and declines contracts that would destabilize rather than recalibrate.
Their preferred venues are elegant: the bathhouse, the perfume court, the private theatrical box. Their favored methods are slow and social — substances introduced through cosmetics, food, incense, and ambient contact over weeks or months. The target feels unwell, then unweller, then simply stops. Autopsies find nothing that a good physician would not expect in a man of that age under that much political stress. The Sand Veil maintains client confidentiality absolutely; their secondary income is the threat of that confidentiality being maintained in perpetuity for clients who become targets.
The guild's weakness is their own doctrine. Because they insist on philosophical justification, they can be argued out of a contract or into one through careful framing, which makes them susceptible to manipulation by clients skilled in moral rhetoric. Several known Sand Veil commissions that appeared to be acts of principled correction have later been traced to rivals who framed their personal enemies as political excess. The guild acknowledges this problem internally; they have not solved it.
