The Red Orchard Compact

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Contract Assassin Cult — Island Shrines and Tidal Sanctuaries#

"They say the Compact only accepts contracts against oathbreakers and tyrants. They say a great many things about the Compact that comfort people who wish to believe it." — coastal magistrate's private journal

The Red Orchard Compact presents itself as an immaculate religious order treating political assassination as ritual correction — a theological mechanism for restoring balance when human law has failed irreparably. Its public doctrine holds that Compact agents only act against those who have broken binding oaths, violated sanctuary, or perpetuated documented atrocities. Its island shrines and tidal sanctuaries, accessible only at certain tides, are architecturally beautiful and rigorously maintained. The theology is coherent, the ritual practice genuine, and the public myth carefully cultivated.

In reality the Compact can be hired, provided the client structures their commission in theologically acceptable terms — which the order's senior readers interpret with remarkable flexibility. A merchant who has failed to pay a contracted debt can be reclassified as an oathbreaker; a governor who enforced an inconvenient law can be framed as a violator of elder compact. The order's poison gardens produce compounds without equal, and its agents are trained from childhood in patient infiltration and the maintenance of ordinary social identities across years of embedded placement.

Adventurers sometimes stumble into Compact operations while investigating apparently unconnected deaths, recognizing the signature only by its absence — the complete lack of evidence that anything unnatural occurred. Those who manage to reach the shrines and present legitimate grievances may find the Compact receptive; those who seek to investigate its patrons learn quickly that the order's discretion is absolute and its patience for inquiry is not.
