The Pine Oath

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Warden Circle — Nord-Vast#

"They will get you to the next waystation. They will not explain why the last three travelers on that road did not arrive." — Amber Sledge League caravan guard

The Pine Oath is Nord-Vast's decentralized compact of hunters, path-wardens, and oathkeepers who collectively maintain the monster roads, winter sanctuaries, and wilderness waymarker systems across the northern territories. There is no central authority, no hierarchy above the local warden circle, and no annual assembly; coordination happens through a shared oath structure, standardized waymarker carvings, and an oral message network that moves information through the forest faster than most couriers move on open road. Individual circles are autonomous and highly localized, which means the compact's quality varies considerably by region.

The Pine Oath's relationship with southern administrative structures — Umbra Magni survey teams, Amber Sledge League caravan authorities, occasional Bastioned Purple garrison patrols — is one of deep and practiced suspicion. Wardens have watched three generations of southern administrators arrive with improvement schemes and leave having improved nothing while disturbing several things that functioned adequately. They cooperate when cooperation costs nothing and withdraw when it costs anything at all.

For adventurers, Pine Oath wardens are essential navigational resources in Nord-Vast's deep territories. Their knowledge of safe routes, monster territories, and seasonal hazards has no equivalent in any published source. They will share it in exchange for demonstrated competence, genuine respect, and occasionally the performance of tasks the compact's oaths prevent members from undertaking directly — the destruction of certain corrupted waymarker circles chief among these.
