The Pilots of the Seventh Star

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Temple-Mariner Order — Azure Isles#

"A Seventh Star pilot will get you through the worst water in the world. They will also spend the entire passage explaining what it means." — Merchant captain, Tel Ivara

The Pilots of the Seventh Star are a semi-sacred fraternity of navigators whose authority in Isles waters derives from a combination of genuine unmatched competence and a theological framework that treats deep-water navigation as moral trial and celestial text. Their beacon shrines and storm chapels mark every significant headland and hazard in the Azure Isles; the chapels are maintained at Pilot expense and are open to any mariner regardless of affiliation, an act of institutional generosity that earns the order goodwill even from fleet-houses who find their theology tedious.

The Pilots' creed holds that the open sea measures character by what a sailor does when no shore is visible and no authority is watching. This leads, in practice, to a rescue obligation that the order enforces with its own small patrol fleet — Pilot ships will break off any other operation to respond to distress signals, and have done so for vessels belonging to active enemies. The fleet-house consortium has twice attempted to subordinate the Pilot fleet to commercial escort schedules; both attempts ended with public shaming campaigns that the houses found more costly than the patrols they had objected to.

Adventurers who need passage through difficult Isles waters will find Pilot-affiliated captains more available than Convocation-licensed merchants and considerably more expensive in the spiritual currency of having opinions explained at length. The Pilots also maintain the most comprehensive collection of wreck charts, current maps, and hazard surveys in the Isles — access to which can occasionally be negotiated in exchange for information about newly discovered wrecks or previously undocumented hazards.
