The Pearl Knives

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Mercenary Divers — Voided Zone#

"Hire Pearl Knives when you need something done in black water at midnight and cannot afford for it to go wrong. They are expensive for the same reason."

The Pearl Knives are a specialized mercenary company operating exclusively in the maritime environment of the Voided Zone and Shattered Isles — trained for underwater work, nocturnal harbor operations, ship cutting, and the recovery or destruction of submerged imperial infrastructure. They take their name from the short curved blades they carry for underwater cutting work, and from the pearl-diving tradition of the island communities that produced their founding generation. There are rarely more than sixty active members at any time; the training mortality is high.

Their operational range spans everything from recovering sealed cargo from drowned imperial warehouses to sabotaging enemy vessels at anchor, delivering assassination targets via midnight harbor infiltration, and mapping submerged ruins for clients who prefer not to ask questions about how the survey was conducted. They maintain three hidden anchorages in the Shattered Isles, rotating between them based on seasonal weather and political pressure, and communicate through a cipher system built into the navigation charts they sell as cover.

The Pearl Knives' greatest institutional secret is that they have been mapping the full extent of the Voided Zone's submerged ruins for decades, building a comprehensive chart of what lies beneath the cursed waters that no other organization possesses. This chart is their ultimate leverage — several powers have offered extraordinary sums for it, and at least two have sent teams to take it by force and failed to return. Adventurers hired for Voided Zone operations will eventually hear of the Knives; whether as potential employers, rivals, or the only people who can navigate a submerged passage that stands between the party and their objective.
