The Office of Quiet Revision

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Bureau Ministry Cabal — Umbra Magni#

"The empire fell a hundred and seventeen years ago. The Office is still correcting the paperwork to ensure it did not." — Satirical pamphlet, Umbra Magni, confiscated

The Office of Quiet Revision operates from the scriptoria of Aurux Spire and a network of district archive annexes, staffed by archivists whose official function is the maintenance of the successor state's legal and cartographic records. Their actual function is the careful, continuous alteration of those records to preserve the illusion of uninterrupted imperial order: precedents are quietly reattributed, land titles are redated, maps are revised to show boundaries that have never existed in the physical world, and the biographies of senior officials are revised to omit inconvenient gaps in service that coincide with collapses and insurgencies. The Office does not regard this as falsification; it regards it as maintenance.

The practical consequence is that Umbra Magni's legal system is built on a foundation of curated fiction, and disputes that reach the senior courts are resolved by reference to documents that the Office has shaped toward predetermined outcomes. This is not universally understood, but it is widely suspected, and the suspicion is itself managed — the Office maintains a controlled body of self-critical scholarship that acknowledges minor archival imperfections while firmly establishing that the major structures are sound.

Adventurers requiring legal documentation in Umbra Magni discover that the Office controls the authentication process and can produce, deny, or lose any document with equal bureaucratic facility. Original documents recovered from pre-collapse archives are dangerous to the Office's work and are either purchased at generous prices or, when the owner proves inconveniently principled, lost through administrative channels.
