The Meridian Custodians

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Mage Bureaucracy — Umbra Magni#

"You may govern the roads. You may not govern what is beneath them. That distinction has kept three administrations from a very short collapse." — Custodian senior warden, briefing new governor

The Meridian Custodians are a technically minded mage order tasked with monitoring the ancient engines, structural seals, road wards, and arcane infrastructure embedded throughout Umbra Magni's territory by the Magnus Empire at the height of its power. Much of this infrastructure remains active, poorly understood, and dangerously interdependent; the Custodians' survey towers, positioned near the most sensitive restricted sites, serve as both monitoring stations and polite warnings to administrators who might otherwise attempt to alter what they cannot comprehend. The order produces engineers, not scholars, and its members are trained to maintain first and understand second.

Umbra Magni's government cannot effectively function without the Custodians. The road wards that suppress bandit activity along the eastern trade corridors, the flood management systems beneath the river cities, and the structural enchantments that keep several important administrative buildings standing all require regular Custodian maintenance. This practical monopoly gives the order a political leverage it exercises with careful restraint, preferring to be indispensable rather than threatening. No administration in the past century has attempted to replace them; the one that made preliminary inquiries experienced a temporary failure of the flood management system that the Custodians regretted deeply.

Adventurers exploring restricted ruins in Umbra Magni will encounter Custodian wardposts with some regularity. Access beyond the wardpost requires either a Custodian permit or a Custodian escort, the latter being more informative and considerably more expensive. Custodian members encountered in the field are usually willing to trade technical information about specific sites for survey data from areas they have not yet mapped.
