The Luminant Veil
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
Arcane Society — Azure Isles#
"Their outer circles teach you to remember everything. Their inner circles teach you to feel whatever they decide you should feel about it." — Former student, anonymous
The Luminant Veil operates through a constellation of moon observatories and mirrored conservatories distributed across the Azure Isles' higher ground, schools whose stated purpose is the cultivation of disciplined memory, aesthetic perception, and long-horizon political thinking. Their graduates fill the Isles' diplomatic corps, historical academies, and the advisory positions that older fleet-house patriarchs quietly prefer to keep occupied by people trained to their own standards. The Veil's curriculum is genuinely excellent by any measure, and its outer circles produce scholars and strategists of real distinction.
The inner circles are a different matter. Several independent investigations — none of which produced formal findings, for reasons that students of the Veil's political reach will find unsurprising — have suggested that the Veil's advanced curriculum includes work on emotional resonance and what its theorists call 'consensus architecture': techniques for shaping how groups of people feel about specific memories or decisions without altering the memories themselves. Whether this constitutes compulsion magic in the legally prosecutable sense is a question the Isles' judicial system has declined to examine closely.
Adventurers who encounter Veil graduates in diplomatic or advisory contexts should note that such individuals are exceptionally good at making their preferences seem like your own conclusions. Adventurers who are specifically hired to investigate the Veil tend to find their contractors becoming inexplicably satisfied with preliminary reports and declining to authorize further work.
