Last-Stand Wardens — Border Abbeys and Fortress Hospices#
"They hold the tomb road at Helvant's Pass with eleven wardens and a hospice full of sick pilgrims. They have held it for three winters. I do not ask what they have done to hold it. I am grateful the lamp is still lit." — merchant, Nord-Vast frontier
The Last Beacon Compact exists wherever undead pressure became too constant and too geographically isolated for state military responses to sustain. Its chapters occupy border abbeys, lighthouse keeps, and fortress hospices at the edges of inhabited regions — the positions that matter enormously when the pressure comes and are too unglamorous for regular garrison troops to staff when it does not. Compact wardens are trained in the specific discipline of holding a defined perimeter with diminishing resources against pressure that does not tire, negotiate, or retreat.
The organization maintains itself through a combination of pilgrim hospitality income, grants from cities that benefit from the tomb roads remaining clear, and the labor of the hospice patients who recover sufficiently to contribute to the chapter's maintenance before moving on. Senior wardens are genuinely formidable: decades of specific combat experience against risen dead produces expertise that court-trained soldiers cannot replicate. The Compact also maintains extraordinary records of undead behavior, seasonal pressure patterns, and which sites generate activity, records of both scholarly and tactical value.
The hidden burden of chapters under sustained pressure is the creeping temptation toward forbidden relics — sealed artifacts recovered from collapsed vaults that manifest undeniable effectiveness against risen dead and carry undeniable costs. Several chapters have quietly crossed this line. The Compact's high council knows this and considers it an acceptable operational reality that must never be acknowledged officially. Adventurers hired to resupply isolated chapters occasionally discover what keeping the lamp lit has cost.
