The Lantern Scale
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
Merchant Caravan Guild — Akesh#
"An Akeshi glass-road without a Lantern Scale station is a road that will kill you. The stations are ugly, overpriced, and the most welcome sight in the world at the end of a hard crossing." — Pasharan caravan factor
The desert crossings of Akesh are not survivable by improvisation. Water calculations, solar navigation, sand-storm sheltering, and load-weight management are technical disciplines that the Lantern Scale has refined over four generations of oasis-chain management. Their stations are placed at intervals calibrated precisely to the range of a loaded pack animal in the worst seasonal heat, stocked with replacement water seals, veterinary supplies, and the route intelligence that distinguishes a caravan arriving intact from a caravan becoming a cautionary dune. The guild does not merely facilitate trade; it makes trade physically possible.
Their commercial power derives directly from this indispensability. Lantern Scale rates are high, their monopoly on oasis station management is absolute in the Akeshi interior, and their route captains exercise what is effectively law enforcement authority over caravans in their sector. A caravan master who violates station protocols can be stripped of his guild registry, which makes him unable to obtain water rights, storm insurance, or local escort guarantees — effectively a death sentence for any commercial crossing.
The guild's intelligence value is often overlooked by patrons who see only the commercial function. Lantern Scale route captains observe everything that crosses the desert — troop movements, courier traffic, novel cargo, faces that match descriptions. Their internal route reports, compiled at each season's end, are among the most accurate surveys of Akeshi interior movement available. The Dawn Crucible has a standing purchase agreement for these reports; so, through intermediaries the guild politely pretends not to recognize, do several foreign states.
