The Furnace Ledger
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
Merchant Guild — Iron Heartland#
"When the Ledger raises ore prices in autumn, the border lords start sharpening swords. They have never made the connection." — Khar-Magren factor's apprentice
The Furnace Ledger is the Iron Heartland's dominant commercial institution: a guild of armory owners, caravan masters, foundry directors, and ore-road toll operators whose collective control over the industrial arteries between Khar-Magren, Stonewake, and the surrounding production towns makes them functionally indispensable to every fortress house in the interior. They do not hold political office but they do hold the contracts that feed armies, shoe horses, and replace broken siege equipment. This distinction has proven more durable than most titles.
The Ledger's signature technique is the managed procurement crisis: a quiet reduction in ore supply here, a delayed shipment of armament components there, timed to coincide with border tensions the Ledger's own intelligence arm has been quietly encouraging. When panicking march-lords offer inflated contracts, the Ledger's warehouses are suddenly very well stocked. Guild masters refer to this internally as 'market correction.' The fortress houses know they are being squeezed and continue signing the contracts because the alternative is arming their soldiers with good intentions.
Adventurers working in the Iron Heartland will inevitably cross Furnace Ledger interests — the guild controls caravan protection contracts, foundry access, and a significant portion of the intelligence on road conditions. Their factor-houses are the safest inns on the ore roads and also the most thoroughly monitored. The Ledger does not employ enforcers in the obvious sense; it simply declines to do business with people who cause problems, and in the Heartland, that amounts to the same thing.
