The Ember Needles

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Assassin Fraternity — Akesh#

"He died at the peak of his pilgrimage, in view of the high altar. The temple physicians agreed it was heat exhaustion. The temple physicians were very well compensated that year." — Anonymous notation, Crucible internal review

The solar theology of Akesh includes a doctrine of divine judgment — the principle that the merciless desert sun distinguishes the worthy from the condemned through the mechanism of heat, thirst, and the long walk. The Ember Needles have professionalized this doctrine. They specialize in deaths that look like the desert's natural work: hyperthermia, organ failure from dehydration, the specific presentation of certain venoms that mimic heatstroke in every clinical detail. Their timing preference for public religious occasions is both theatrical and practical — large gatherings provide cover for the initial contact.

The fraternity's technical specialty is the inserted agent. Rather than external contracts executed by arriving operatives, the Ember Needles prefer practitioners embedded in pilgrim routes, temple catering staff, and mausoleum maintenance crews for months before a commission is activated. The infrastructure cost is high but the results are exceptional — a target who dies in the presence of a hundred witnesses, none of whom saw anything suspicious, surrounded by people who will confirm the official account with complete sincerity because they genuinely believe it.

The Ember Needles' connection to the Dawn Crucible is the subject of persistent rumor and no confirmed evidence, which is itself suggestive. Their commissions appear primarily in cases where Crucible factional interests would benefit from a rival's removal but cannot risk the doctrinal contamination of visible political violence. Adventurers who begin investigating a suspicious death in Akesh and follow the evidence carefully often find themselves approaching a door they would have been wiser not to knock on.
