The Ember Burrows
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
Kobold Underkingdoms — Volcanic Fissures and Furnace Caverns#
"Do not purchase a mine survey from a Burrow factor unless you intend to act on it immediately. The tunnel they are describing to you will be structurally compromised within a season, and they will sell the same survey to whoever buys the mine from your estate." — Reach mining consortium warning circular
The Ember Burrows are an archipelago of kobold burrow-polities distributed through the volcanic fissures, collapsed imperial mine complexes, and furnace caverns of the deep subterranean zone. Each burrow-polity is fiercely independent above ground and in constant subterranean competition with its neighbors, but the Burrows collectively share a cultural obsession with heat, craft, and the principle that everything above the stone surface ultimately depends on what happens below it. They maintain this conviction with some justification: most major cities sit atop Burrow-catalogued geology.
Burrow trade above-ground consists of precision traps, alchemical compounds refined from volcanic materials, and detailed mine-surveys whose accuracy is excellent and whose strategic deployment is deliberate. Below ground, the polities tunnel continuously — expanding their own holdings, undermining rival burrows, and occasionally opening passages into spaces they subsequently wish they had left sealed. Burrow artificers produce mechanisms of remarkable complexity and burrow-alchemists have developed thermal processes that surface practitioners have not replicated.
The Ember Burrows present a consistent face of commercial pragmatism to surface visitors, conducting negotiations with professional courtesy and selling exactly what is asked for. The strategic picture behind this facade is one of patient long-term undermining — both literal and political — of every power structure that treats subterranean sovereignty as irrelevant. Adventurers who descend into Burrow territory as guests rather than invaders find a community of extraordinary technical capability and very long institutional memory for insults.
