The Crimson Diet of Valedrac
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
Vampire Court — Fog-Bound Hill Palaces and Vineyard Crypts#
"They send invitations on red-edged vellum. Everyone accepts. No one discusses what the evening costs afterward. This is considered good manners in the valley." — merchant, Valedrac approaches, 115 AR
The Crimson Diet is the dominant aristocratic body of the Valedrac valley system, a confederation of twelve vampire noble houses whose collective landholdings encompass the most productive wine country in the eastern Reach. Where the Sable Rose Courts employ debt as their primary instrument of control, the Diet operates through a more elaborate system of social obligation: the etiquette it enforces is genuine, its archival preservation work is legitimate, and its members maintain the forms of aristocratic culture with an exquisiteness that human noble houses find genuinely impressive. This impression is the product of centuries of deliberate cultivation and serves the same function as camouflage.
The Diet's blood-tithe system operates through inheritance law rather than direct predation. Member houses hold customary rights to 'festival attendance' from tenant communities — seasonal gatherings that combine genuine celebration with a managed feeding protocol administered with enough care to avoid killing or significantly weakening the population base. Succession disputes in the valley are adjudicated by Diet courts according to a legal code the Diet wrote, and the Diet's favored heirs consistently emerge from these proceedings in possession of the most strategically useful properties. Contested successions are occasionally resolved by the conveniently timed death of inconvenient claimants.
The Diet sponsors wars between neighboring territories with the precision of a bloodletting physician: enough conflict to create refugee populations, debt dependency, and incoming communities grateful for stability, not enough to threaten the Diet's own territorial base. Its longer-term vulnerability is demographic — the communities under its management are noticeably smaller and less healthy than comparable populations outside Diet control, a trend that several Diet members have begun arguing must be addressed before outside powers notice and intervene. These internal reformers are, in the Diet's own terminology, the bleeding hearts of the confederation, and they are not currently winning the argument.
