The Copper Door
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
Underground Fraternity — Pashara#
"Three dye-masters vanished the night before the warrant was served. Their techniques went with them. The monopoly the satrap had bought was worthless before the ink dried." — Pasharan commercial registry complaint, filed and dismissed
The artisan quarters of Pashara's silk cities run on a combination of specialized knowledge, guild hierarchy, and the constant threat of having a technique codified, purchased, and locked behind a noble monopoly charter. The Copper Door is the fraternity that resists this process — a mutual-support network hiding runaway craftsmen, funding labor actions, and systematically removing restricted techniques from monopoly control by the elegant method of teaching them to everyone simultaneously. Their workshops are in cellars; their shrines are to pre-collapse craft-saints whose stories all involve a master defying a patron.
The fraternity operates through a cell structure with minimal central coordination. Local groups handle runaways, distribute emergency funds, and identify which techniques are currently under monopoly pressure. When a technique is threatened, the Copper Door floods the market with practitioners before the charter can be enforced — a dozen hidden workshops producing the restricted good simultaneously, distributed across enough households that prosecution becomes impractical. The satrapal courts have tried seventeen times to obtain conviction on monopoly-violation charges; they have not once succeeded in tracing the distribution network.
The Copper Door's reach extends beyond craft protection into a general infrastructure for the politically inconvenient: runaways from debt bondage, witnesses who need to disappear before testimony, religious practitioners whose traditions have been ruled heretical by the Peacock Archive. This breadth makes them valuable to a wide range of adventurers who need discreet urban support, and dangerous to every power in Pashara simultaneously. The fraternity's price for assistance is usually labor — a specific task that serves the network, chosen by the cell, not the visitor.
