The Choir of the Last Echo

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Forbidden Cult — Voided Zone#

"They believe the Voiding was a door left open, not a wound. I have seen what lives in those basilicas. I believe they are wrong. I am not certain they are entirely wrong." — Iron Grapnel senior diver, deposition before the Ash-Port harbor court

The theological consensus across every major religion in the post-collapse world holds that the Voiding was punishment — the Magnus Empire reaching too far, the capital erased as a demonstration of cosmic limit. The Choir of the Last Echo holds an alternative interpretation: that the Voiding was an apotheosis interrupted, a transcendence begun and not completed when the mortal components failed. The empire did not fall; it was in the process of becoming something else when it was disrupted. The capital is not a ruin; it is a chrysalis.

This doctrine attracts scholars who find the punishment narrative intellectually unsatisfying and individuals who have experienced the Voided Zone directly and observed phenomena inconsistent with simple destruction. The Choir's rites are performed in the most hazardous locations — collapsed basilicas where acoustics amplify sounds that have no obvious source, flooded senate vaults where images appear in still water that do not match the surrounding architecture. Their liturgy is composed of fragments recovered from the innermost ruins by members who did not always return intact.

Every mainland authority has formally banned the Choir at least once; none has succeeded in eliminating it, partly because it has no fixed membership and no central location, and partly because it keeps attracting well-connected and intellectually formidable members who make prosecution uncomfortable. Adventurers who encounter Choir members in the field are dealing with people who are, frequently, extremely knowledgeable about the Voided Zone's interior geography and entirely willing to share that knowledge in exchange for company on a descent they cannot make alone.
