The Chapel of the Hollow Crown

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Ruin Cult — Collapsed Basilicas and Sinkhole Shrines#

"The brothers of the Hollow Crown preach that suffering purifies the land. Then something from below the sinkhole ate four of the village's children. I no longer attend their sermons." — farmer, Crestavar approaches, 108 AR

The Chapel of the Hollow Crown presents as a penitential religious movement: itinerant priests and lay brothers who occupy collapsed basilicas and sinkhole shrines throughout the Reach, preaching a doctrine of necessary suffering as the mechanism of regional renewal. Its theology holds that the Aurelian Reach was spiritually corrupted by Magnus imperial excess, that the collapse was divine judgment incompletely delivered, and that the land cannot be renewed until its current populations have been sufficiently purified through hardship and loss. This doctrine is grim but coherent, and it attracts genuine believers in communities that have experienced sufficient misery to find its explanatory framework persuasive.

The Chapel's inner council — the Crowned Penitents, never seen without full-face pale masks — interprets the doctrine considerably more actively than the lay membership understands. 'Orchestrated suffering' is not a metaphor for passive endurance: the Crowned Penitents have released sealed vault-horrors into inhabited areas, provided operational support for peasant uprisings timed to inflict maximum civilian casualties on both sides, and in three documented cases removed the seals from Voided Zone containment sites in the belief that the resulting disruption would accelerate the purification cycle. Their theology has a certain operational logic, provided you are willing to accept premises that most survivors of their interventions do not.

The Chapel's grassroots membership is largely composed of genuine believers who have no knowledge of the Crowned Penitents' activities and would be horrified by them. Several Chapel priests have independently begun investigating why disasters seem to follow the inner council's circuit, and at least two have attempted to bring this information to outside authorities before disappearing. Adventurers who penetrate the Chapel's inner structure discover that several Crowned Penitents possess pre-collapse ritual knowledge specific to the sealed vault-systems beneath old imperial administrative centers — knowledge that should not exist in private hands.
