The Candle Below
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
Underground Society — Crypt-Chapels and Ruined Bathhouses#
"If the letter arrived, it came through the Candle. If it did not arrive, something ate the courier. Either way, do not ask how they managed it." — district secretary, Halvenmoor
The Candle Below operates from an archipelago of hidden rooms: crypt-chapels beneath the rubble of imperial public bathhouses, sealed furnace-passages under market squares, and forgotten maintenance corridors connecting the cellars of otherwise-hostile cities. It emerged as a survival structure in the first decade after the collapse, when the fall of relay roads made legitimate correspondence between isolated communities nearly impossible. Today it functions as the Reach's most reliable courier network for letters, contraband relics, and people who need to be somewhere else before morning.
Operatives — called Wicks — memorize route segments rather than entire networks, so no single arrest compromises more than three links of the chain. Payment is accepted in kind as readily as coin: preserved foodstuffs, medical supplies, blank vellum, and old legal stamps are all standard tender. The Candle maintains a particular specialty in moving the politically inconvenient: dissidents, witnesses, discredited heirs, and the occasional minor noble whose death has been officially scheduled by someone considerably larger.
The Candle's deepest leverage comes from its archive of banned imperial census records — population rolls, tax registers, property surveys — preserved in waxed cartridge-cases inside flooded subcellars. These documents reveal which noble families built their current estates on fraudulent post-collapse land grabs, which clerical houses omitted inconvenient relatives from succession rolls, and which Iron-Bound commanders hold lands they were explicitly prohibited from claiming. The Candle does not advertise this. It simply reminds certain patrons, at convenient moments, that continued cooperation is in everyone's interest.
