The Briar Eclipse

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Fringe Druidic Circle — Blackwood Groves and Moon-Fens#

"The blight took the eastern granaries the same year the Irongate Company cleared the old wood. The beast migrations came through the villages three months after the new road cut across the fen. The Eclipse did not claim responsibility. They never do." — frontier bishop's correspondence

The Briar Eclipse is a feral, politically alert druidic circle rejecting the clean pastoral image that courts and agricultural temples prefer their nature-workers to project. Operating through blackwood groves, sink forests, and moon-fens in regions where land enclosure, road expansion, and industrial extraction have accelerated since the collapse, the Circle defends sacred sites with physical force and ecological intervention in roughly equal measure. Its theology is not gentle: the natural world is not a garden to be tended but a power to be respected on its own terms, and encroachment is understood as an act of war.

Eclipse practitioners are expert in the engineering of what they call corrections: blight introductions into specific crops, the steering of predator migrations into human movement corridors, the activation of bog hydrology to render newly cleared land unfarmable, and the deployment of specific fungi, insect populations, and rot accelerants against timber operations and road construction projects. These interventions are calibrated to be deniable as natural events, a discipline requiring considerable ecological knowledge and patience. The Circle does not rush its responses; it waits for the right season.

The Eclipse maintains a public face through hedge-witches and village herb-workers who are genuine members providing genuine community service — midwifery, fever treatment, crop blessing, animal husbandry advice. This face is both sincere and strategic: it ensures that the Circle has defenders in every community it protects and intelligence assets in every settlement near a target grove. Adventurers hired to investigate ecological disasters in recently developed frontier regions sometimes find themselves following evidence toward a Circle cell; at that point they must decide whether to complete the investigation or accept that some discoveries are better left unrecorded.
