The Brazen Continuance

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Magni Holdout — Mountain Fortresses and Vault-Sanctums#

"They do not call themselves an empire. They call themselves the Continuance. The distinction matters enormously to them. I am told this at length every time I visit, which I do because their engineers are the only people in the east who can still repair a ward-lock." — Umbra Magni ambassador, 109 AR

The Brazen Continuance is the clearest institutional heir to the pre-collapse Magnus Empire operating in the eastern reaches, a claim it makes with aggressive literalism: its governance structure, legal codes, administrative forms, and military ranks are direct continuations of imperial precedent, maintained without interruption — according to Continuance historians — through the collapse itself. Its mountain fortress-complex east of the Voided Zone survived the collapse with unusual completeness, and the relic engineering infrastructure preserved within its vault-sanctums represents a concentration of functional pre-collapse technology found nowhere else in the known post-imperial world.

The Continuance's political position is one of implacable legitimist contempt: every other government in the region is an illegal squatter on imperial territory, and the Continuance is simply waiting, with the patience of institutions that outlast dynasties, for the moment when this becomes practically relevant rather than merely legally correct. It maintains full diplomatic representation with both the Umbra Magni and the Luminous Claimants — relations characterized by mutual respect, detailed disagreements about constitutional succession theory, and the shared understanding that neither can afford to make an enemy of the other.

The Continuance's strategic value, and its primary vulnerability, is its engineering. Its vault-sanctums contain working ward-locks, calibration instruments, enchanted infrastructure components, and maintenance protocols for imperial-era magical systems that the rest of the post-collapse world has lost the capacity to operate. Every major power in the region wants access to this knowledge; most of them have ongoing efforts to acquire it through theft, suborned defection, or targeted archaeological work on Continuance-adjacent sites. Adventurers employed by competing powers in the eastern theater frequently find themselves tasked with operations the Continuance's own security apparatus — ancient, meticulous, and thoroughly paranoid — has been specifically designed to detect.
