The Brass Ledger Compact
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
Merchant League — Aurelian Reach#
"Pay the Compact first, your creditors second, and your gods when you have coin left over. That is the correct order of operations." — overheard at the Threefold Market, Crestavar
The Brass Ledger Compact is the dominant commercial confederation of the Aurelian Reach, binding together carriers, assay-agents, debt-arbiters, and bond-insurers under a single system of standardized weights, interest tables, and dispute protocols. Founded forty-one years after the Magnus collapse by a consortium of factor-houses in Crestavar, the Compact filled the vacuum left when imperial currency officers stopped showing up to work. Its brass ledger seal — a balance scale superimposed on a flame — appears on every major toll road, river-dock, and grain depot west of the Umbra Marches.
The Compact's methods are patient and structural. When a barony runs short of coin, Compact assayers offer bridge loans against future harvest liens. When a rival trading house grows too large, the Compact's intelligence arm — nominally called the Office of Arbitration — manufactures conditions for a short war: withheld grain deliveries, inflated transport costs, a well-timed rumor of default. Wars are expensive, and the Compact finances both sides. After the smoke clears, it purchases the defaulted fiefs through layered intermediary firms no individual lord can trace back to a single ledger.
Beneath its legalistic surface the Compact harbors operatives capable of considerably more than paperwork. Its senior arbiters can access sealed credit histories, forged provenance documents, and at least one cache of pre-collapse imperial census data useful for exposing false noble claims. Adventurers occasionally find themselves hired as 'freight escorts' for shipments that turn out to be extremely motivated people fleeing debt-contracts, or as 'property assessors' asked to enter ruins already occupied by the previous debt-holder's armed retainers.
