The Amber Sledge League

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Mercantile Caravan — Nord-Vast#

"Ask a Sledge merchant the safe way through. Then ask where they found the amber. The answers will not match, and the second one will be more useful." — Pine Oath warden

The Amber Sledge League is Nord-Vast's primary commercial institution: a seasonal trading confederation that moves amber, hides, pine resin, whale oil, relic bone from pre-collapse sites, and northern medicines southward by sled and river barge, returning with iron tools, southern grain, and the manufactured goods that northern settlements cannot produce locally. The League operates through a network of seasonal trade camps positioned at river junctions, portage points, and lake crossings, each camp staffed year-round by a skeleton crew and expanded dramatically when the seasonal caravans arrive.

What makes the League genuinely distinctive is the quality of its route knowledge. Sledge merchants have been traveling Nord-Vast's hidden passages for generations and know terrain that does not appear on any published map — winter crossings over frozen bogs, summer river cuts that halve travel time, and alternative routes around monster territories that the Pine Oath's public waymarker network does not acknowledge. This knowledge is carefully proprietary and constitutes, alongside the commodity trading itself, the League's most valuable commercial asset.

Adventurers who need to move quickly through Nord-Vast's interior will find League caravan masters cooperative for a reasonable fee. Moving under League colors offers a degree of protection — most of the northern territories' darker elements have learned that raiding Sledge caravans creates more trouble than it profits — though this protection is regional and based on reputation that adventurers traveling independently have not yet established.
