The Vorngard - Raiders of the Whale Bone Sea

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Sea-Clans, Settlement, and Prestige#

The Vorngard are best understood as a prestige economy afloat. Captains gather followers through success, omen, gift distribution, marriage alliances, and sheer narrative force. Their longships, often built from whale bone and dark resinous timber, are feared for their range and silence under hostile weather. They raid, trade, escort, ransom, settle, and sometimes serve as elite marines for powers that hate them the rest of the year. In the Isles they are an existential nuisance; in the north they are proof that the sea rewards daring more than law.

The Vorngard are not best understood as a state, but as a maritime civilizational force: half-giant sea-clans, oath halls, longships carved from great-whale bone and black timber, storm-priests, raider aristocrats, and settlement-makers. They raid, ransom, escort, colonize, and intermarry. They are feared not merely because they kill, but because they arrive where maps say they should not.

To the Isles they are an endless northern pressure. To Nord-Vast they are one of the world's great living sagas. To the Reach they are predators, mercenaries, and occasionally founders of new mixed polities.
