Sivanya
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
Portfolio and Common Titles#
Sivanya governs illusion, veils, guarded truth, necessary masks, sacred concealment, identities kept for survival, and the wisdom that not every revelation should occur in public light. Titles include the Seventh Veil, Lady of Hidden Faces, the Masked Teacher, and Keeper of Necessary Seeming. Symbols include layered veils, seven masks, mirrored smoke, false doors, and eyes painted on cloth that never quite align.
Historical and Theological Profile#
Sivanyan theology is indispensable in a world defined by the Veiling and haunted by the First Silence. She does not merely patronize lies. Her domain is the difference between deception that exploits and concealment that protects. After the Veiling, many theologians turned to Sivanya for language about divine absence: the gods were not gone, but hidden by a law that even they could not simply tear aside. Forbidden scholars also use Sivanyan metaphors when discussing why some truths remain dangerous even when true.
Role in the Serathi War#
Sivanya governed the disguises by which gods and mortals crossed the war's boundaries. Ivara appears as a kinsman, Priavan as a beggar, a spy as a priest, a siege engine as a votive gift, and an honest warning as a dream no one can verify. Sivanyan theologians say the war proves that revelation without timing destroys as surely as concealment without conscience. The Veiling later made that argument cosmic.
Institutions, Clergy, and Rites#
Sivanyan clergy are illusionists, performers, spies with ethical codes, protectors of endangered identities, occult teachers, masked midwives, and guardians of restricted initiations. Rites include the Taking of the Veil, the Mask Lent for Survival, the Sevenfold Question, and the Unmasking only when a truth has been prepared to be received. Her temples are theaters, hidden schools, veil rooms, and shrines behind other shrines.
Regional Expressions#
Pashara respects Sivanya in diplomacy, witness protection, and contract interpretation where appearance and truth must both be managed. The Azure Isles use Sivanyan practice in theatre, intelligence, and family scandals. Umbra Magni distrusts her because uncontrolled concealment defeats census, yet its own state secrets often require Sivanyan tools. The Reach loves her in refugee communities, spy networks, and occult schools. Iron-Bound culture distrusts masks as evasions, though scouts and reformers understand their utility. Khavari omen masks, hostage disguises, and night rites sometimes resemble Sivanyan practice without accepting her doctrine.
Conflicts and Heresies#
Sivanya conflicts with Norgovir over exploitative secrecy, with Nura over the timing of revelation, and with Valtar when records endanger the innocent. Her relation to the First Silence is central: she may be the only major goddess whose clergy can say, without embarrassment, that a veil can be necessary even when it frustrates the righteous. Such traditions surface in accounts of hidden identities, false temples, secrets protected for good reasons, dangerous unmaskings, Veiling theology, and conflicts between those who need truth now and those who know truth can kill when released unprepared.
