Hanspar

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Portfolio and Common Titles#

Hanspar governs rivers, dangerous crossings, ferrymen, flood survival, barges, delta law, water routes beyond jurists, smugglers' passages, and the price paid to move between one bank and another. Titles include the Water Rat, Lord of the Last Ferry, the Mud-Blessed Guide, and Keeper of the Unlicensed Crossing. Symbols include poles, river rats, wet coins, ferry bells, broken bridge planks, and maps stained by floodwater.

Historical and Theological Profile#

Hanspar is a god of practical liminality. Valtar may own the bridge in law, but Hanspar owns the night crossing when the bridge is watched, burned, cursed, or too expensive. His worship grew in river civilizations, marshes, canal districts, refugee routes, smuggler deltas, and barge cultures that know movement depends on local water knowledge as much as official permission. He is not wholly respectable, but he is often necessary.

Role in the Serathi War#

Hanspar's war stories belong to river mouths, ferry ropes, marsh crossings, and the ugly little passages armies forget until they need them. Ferrymen smuggled scouts, corpses, lovers, spies, plague victims, and even King Priavan's ransom gifts across channels whose names never enter royal epics. Hansparite shrines near the Bronze Narrows still teach that every heroic siege depends on small crossings where ordinary people decide who lives, who pays, and who is left in the water.

Institutions, Clergy, and Rites#

Hansparite clergy are ferrymen, barge priests, marsh guides, smugglers, flood prophets, canal workers, and keepers of drown names. Rites include the Wet Coin paid before a crossing, the Pole Blessing, the Flood Bargain, and the Naming of the Drowned after waters recede. His priests are expected to know when to break law for survival and when survival has become mere theft.

Regional Expressions#

The Reach honors Hanspar in river baronies, Corpse-Marrow Fens, Ossam Bridge, marsh deltas, and smuggler towns. Pashara invokes him along caravan rivers and hidden irrigation channels. Akesh knows him in wadis, ports, and night crossings. Iron-Bound bridge wardens distrust Hanspar but often leave offerings where floods undermine military roads. Umbra Magni licenses ferries so aggressively that unlicensed Hansparite networks flourish. The Azure Isles adapt him to channel pilots, while Shattered Isles smugglers treat him as nearly unavoidable.

Conflicts and Heresies#

Hanspar conflicts with Valtar when lawful crossing becomes unjust exclusion, with Besmarya when maritime theft invades river custom, and with Pharassah when drowned dead are not properly named. The First Silence appears in river lore as depth: rivers cut through buried layers, carry rumors from impossible underworks, and sometimes expose stones no archive admits. Such traditions surface in accounts of illegal ferries, flood rescues, smuggling ethics, corpse canals, bridge politics, and crossings where the price is not money but a secret carried to the far bank.
