Gozra

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Portfolio and Common Titles#

Gozra governs storm, sea, sky, wind, rain, reef, tide, weather, living coast, and the indifference of nature to human paperwork. Titles include the Twofold Tempest, Breath of Sea and Sky, the Salt-Crowned, Cloud-Breaker, and the Green Wave. Symbols include shells split by lightning, spiral clouds, wet leaves, wave-marked stones, bird bones, and masks half sea-beast and half storm face.

Historical and Theological Profile#

Gozra is less a civic god than a divine weather of the world. Theologically, Gozra resists tidy personality: sailor cults speak differently from forest rain cults, and both differ from Steppe ashwind propitiators. Historically, Gozra cohered from the mortal recognition that weather is not scenery but authority. The Magnus Empire tried to make weather governable through engines, rites, irrigation law, and harbor warding. Gozra's priesthood accepted practical cooperation but never the imperial fantasy that storm could be made obedient.

Role in the Serathi War#

Gozra made the Bronze Narrows feel alive and hostile to certainty. Storms saved Serath from early assault, drowned a relief fleet whose allegiance remains disputed, and turned the Bitter Returns into sea-tragedy for many League houses. Neither side fully owned Gozra. Sailors learned that storm gods may answer need, insult, blood, or weather itself, and that a harbor blessed in one season may become a grave in the next.

Institutions, Clergy, and Rites#

Gozran clergy are sailors, storm prophets, rain callers, reef wardens, marsh hermits, ship blessers, and weather witnesses. Their temples are often open to wind and water. Rites include the First Salt at launching, the Storm Listening before dangerous voyages, the Green Renewal after drought, and the Breaking of False Calm when a community admits that suppressed danger has already arrived. Sacrifices are typically biodegradable, symbolic, and immediate: bread to waves, hair to wind, old ropes to fire before rain.

Regional Expressions#

Gozra is central to sailors, fisherfolk, Vorngard sea-clans, Shattered Isles pilots, Warmglass Coast ports, and Azure admiralty weather schools. Akesh honors Gozra in littoral reefs despite Nura's solar dominance. Pashara invokes Gozra in monsoon contracts and stormland caravans. Iron-Bound culture respects weather as a logistical fact but prefers gods who answer in stone. Khavari ashwind rites sometimes resemble Gozran practice, but Steppe theologians usually interpret such forces through Ushra, Hollow Sky, and mounted omen.

Conflicts and Heresies#

Gozra conflicts with Valtar when states overregulate rivers, with Nethyr when weather engines become arrogant, and with Besmarya when pirates confuse sea luck with sea permission. The First Silence appears in Gozran thought as a depth beneath weather: storms remember far back, but even they do not cross the closed wall. The Voided Zone is treated as an injury to sea and sky alike, not merely an arcane disaster. Such traditions surface in accounts of cursed voyages, weather diplomacy, storm saints, drowned shrines, angry reefs, and the political consequences of a god who cannot be bribed by law.
