Calendar and Reckoning

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Most courts use the Veiled Reckoning for international dates, counted A.V. - After the Veiling. Scholars, however, often retain B.V. dates for deep chronology and imperial regnal notation for the High Empire. The Reach commonly preserves local saint-day calendars alongside market cycles. The Heartland favors practical seasonal musters and tax quarters. The Isles maintain the most rigorous archive dating, frequently citing year, tide, moon, and office. Umbra Magni uses official bureau dating in parallel with the Veiled Reckoning. Pashara and Akesh both preserve older court calendars for ritual observance while still using broader reckoning for diplomacy.

Because of this multiplicity, documents can disagree without either being false. A treaty may be dated by harvest quarter in one archive, by solar house festival in another, and by A.V. year in a third. Historians read dates as evidence of political position as much as chronology.
