Beasts
Reference tables contain changeable development values.
The wolf does not hate you. It simply needs to eat, and you are slower than a deer.
Beasts range from mundane predators grown to unnatural size to magical hybrids whose origins are lost to pre-imperial experimentation. They are the most commonly encountered threat outside settled areas, and even veteran adventurers respect the danger posed by a winter wolf pack or a nesting owlbear.
Canines and Lupines#
| Name | Level | Size | HP | Notable Abilities |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wolf | 1 | Medium | 24 | Pack attack; knockdown bite |

Winter wolves are among the most feared beasts of the Nord-Vast. Unlike their mundane cousins, they possess a cunning intelligence and a freezing breath that can incapacitate an armored warrior in seconds. They are known to negotiate with frost giant clans, exchanging hunting cooperation for territorial rights.
Vermin and Arachnids#

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Giant Spider | 1 | Medium | 16 | Web trap; venomous bite; wall climb |
| Giant Rat | -1 | Small | 8 | Filth fever; swarming |

Giant spiders infest the ruins and deep forests of the Aurelian Reach with particular density. The collapse of imperial pest-control wards allowed arachnid populations to grow unchecked for over a century, and many an abandoned villa now hosts webs thick enough to stop a horse.
Magical Hybrids#
| Name | Level | Size | HP | Notable Abilities |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basilisk | 5 | Medium | 60 | Petrifying gaze; venomous bite |
| Cockatrice | 3 | Small | 38 | Petrifying touch; fluttering charge |
| Owlbear | 4 | Large | 56 | Screech; mauling embrace; bloodcurdling howl |

| Griffon | 4 | Large | 58 | Flight; pounce; keen senses |
| Giant Eagle | 3 | Large | 45 | Flight; talon strike; noble temperament |
Owlbears are widely believed to be the product of imperial-era magical experimentation. Whatever their origin, they have bred true for over a century and now occupy ecological niches across temperate forests. They are fiercely territorial, and their bloodcurdling screech can paralyze inexperienced adventurers with fear. Nesting mothers are particularly aggressive and have been known to pursue intruders for miles.
Manticores are solitary ambush predators that prefer high terrain overlooking trade roads. Their tail spikes can be launched at range with surprising accuracy, and their cruel intelligence allows them to toy with prey, demanding tribute in exchange for safe passage. Several Reach duchies post bounties on manticore heads, though few collectors survive the attempt.
Aquatic Beasts#
| Name | Level | Size | HP | Notable Abilities |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reef Shark | 2 | Large | 32 | Blood scent; feeding frenzy |
| Sea Serpent | 8 | Gargantuan | 120 | Constrict; capsize; spine rake |
Sea serpents are the terror of the inner sea, capable of capsizing small vessels and dragging sailors beneath the waves. The Azure Isles navy maintains dedicated serpent-hunting flotillas, yet confirmed kills remain rare. Old salts claim the largest specimens rival warships in length.
Cave Predators#
| Name | Level | Size | HP | Notable Abilities |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cave Bear | 3 | Large | 48 | Mauling claws; ferocity; darkvision |
Cave bears are apex predators of the underground frontier. They are larger and more aggressive than their surface cousins, with poor eyesight compensated by extraordinary hearing and scent. Miners in the Iron Heartland consider a cave bear den a sign to reroute a tunnel rather than attempt clearance.
